 Introduction

Research and  teaching  activities  at  the  Laboratory

of Hydraulics Models, Department of Civil Engineering

of K.N. Toosi University of Technology started in 2006

in order to carry out M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses,  research

and consult projects related to water industry. Research

themes of laboratory include water engineering , hydraulic

engineering, river engineering, and hydraulic and marine structures.

Hydraulic Models Laboratory is situated on a building with

area about 200m2 at Department of Civil Engineering.

Facilities

The laboratory contains a flume for open channel flow experiments, wave flumes,

head and storage tank, pumps and a host of  equipment for  taking quantitative

measurements used for physical model studies.

Flumes:

1- Large wave flume (Armfield – UK)

·        12.5 meter long (length overall is 3.25m longer than the working

section defined), 0.30 meter wide and 0.45 meter deep

·        Tilting, recirculation hydraulic flume (Slope: +1:40 max, Slope: -1:200 max)

·        Walls: Toughened glass Bed Exclusively fabricated from stainless steel

·        Pump: Close-coupled centrifugal for accurate control of discharge

·        End Tanks: GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)

·        Sump Tanks: and Pipe work PVC (Polyvinylchloride)

·        Piston type wave generator (regular, irregular and user defined waves)

2- Flume (Water Research Center - Iran)

·        10 meter long, 0.50 meter wide and 0.50 meter deep

·        Tilting, recirculation hydraulic flume

·        Variable slope

·        Glass-sided flume

  Projects

1.     Experimental Investigation of Wave Attenuation on Mud Layer (M.Sc thesis-civil

Engineering-marine structures: By Farzin Samsami, under the supervision of: Dr. Mohsen Soltanpour)

Abstract: Although typical muddy coasts are not too common, they can be  found  in many  coastal

areas of the world, normally adjacent to big rivers where bottom surfaces of such coastal environments

are covered with certain layers of soft mud. Some well-known examples  of mud  coasts are Ariake

Sea in Japan, Louisiana East Bay in the United States and North-West of Persian Gulf. Conducting a

series of wave-flume laboratory experiments on commercial kaolinite, the wave height attenuation is

studied in the present study. Figure shows the sketch of experimental setup.

2.     Experimental Investigation of Sand Ripple Formation under Wave and Current

Abstract: Wave ripples are formed once the oscillatory motion is of sufficient

strength to cause general movement of the surface particles. The  height  and

length of the ripples grow until a stable ripple is obtained depending   on  the

prevailing conditions. Wave-generated ripples show  an almost  symmetrical

and rounded profile. A set of laboratory experiments on sand samples taken

from coastal area were conducted in this study to understand ripple formation.

Figure shows the sketch of experimental setup.
